When Leeds sculptor Antonia Stowe appealed in 2005 for buttons for her art installation, Six Million Plus, one elderly woman presented her with 41 buttons – one for every member of her family killed in the Holocaust.
Now more than six million buttons are on show at Ripon Cathedral as Antonia’s artwork commemorates the Holocaust.
Antonia and her team came up with the idea of using buttons because they come in all shapes and sizes and colours, just like people.
“They also remind us of the clothes forcibly removed from victims as they entered the death camps,” remarked Antonia.
The installation runs until 20th February.
