A thriving Jewish community, a stately home, independent shops and championship golf courses can be found in Leeds 17.
Leeds 17 is home to some of the most affluent areas in the city, which offer a high level of services and activities to match. Moortown, Shadwell and Alwoodley each encompass a large majority of the Leeds Jewish community and some of the finest golf clubs in the region.
The Leeds 17 postcode is highly aspirational and is home to a range of independent stores providing goods and services not readily available elsewhere in Leeds.
Attractive Alwoodley
Alwoodley is one of the most exclusive areas in Leeds and is well known for its golf clubs and courses. Moor Allerton Golf Club features a 27-hole championship course and is set in 220 acres of lush Yorkshire countryside. National and international events have been staged at the course, attracting world class players such as Tony Jacklin, Gary Player and Greg Norman.
Around 30 percent of the Leeds Jewish community live in Alwoodley, and Etz Chaim Synagogue and Brodetsky Primary School are located here.
Take a stroll around the shopping areas of King Lane, The Avenue and Harrogate Road where you’ll find much retail variety.
Scenic Shadwell
Bordering Alwoodley, Slaid Hill and Shadwell provide a combination of retail outlets, quaint cottages, a pub and post office, lending the area its village feel. There is a string of boutique style shops in the village, including wedding specialists and florists. Added to Shadwell’s leafy surrounds is the 18-hole Brandon Golf Course.
Moortown Community
In Moortown, you will find a host of key meeting places for the Jewish community: Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue (BHH) and the United Hebrew Congregation Synagogue (UHC), as well as the Marjorie and Arnold Ziff Community Centre (MAZCC), which hosts a broad range of activities for all ages. It is also home to Radio Jcom. Nearby is The Zone, a youth club for children up to the age of 18, which offers a range of activities, from music production and sports to arts and crafts.
Moortown is also home to Donisthorpe Hall, an award-winning residential care home for elderly members of the Jewish community and non-Jewish residents who wish to live in an orthodox Jewish environment.
Moortown Corner, located at the junction between Street Lane and Harrogate Road, has something for everyone in the form of a selection of shops, including a Jewish bakery and kosher supermarket, as well as a vast Sainsbury’s.
Moortown Golf Club was formed in 1909 and its popularity grew steadily. The Ryder Cup was hosted at the course 20 years after its formation in 1929. Today, it is recognised as a championship golf course.
Historic Highlight
LS17 has its own slice of historical heritage in the form of Harewood House, which lies in over 100 acres of gardens on the outskirts of Leeds 17 and attracts visitors from far and wide.

- It was built in the mid 1700s after being commissioned by Edward Lascelles, a West Indian plantation owner of English ancestry, with money his father, Henry Lascelles, made in the West Indian sugar trade.
- It has been home to the Lascelles family since it was built and the 7th Earl, cousin to the Queen and Countess, still lives there.
- The house features furniture by designers such as Thomas Chippendale and paintings by JMW Turner and other acclaimed artists.
